Online Teaching Details Jan 2021

08-January-21

Dear Parent

I hope you had a nice Christmas break and may I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy new year in 2021.

We were very hopeful before the Christmas break that school would reopen on 6 January 2021 and that school-life could continue like it did prior to Christmas. Unfortunately this has not happened and the Department of Education have decided that all schools must close until the end of January.

All of our students will now move to online learning from Monday 11th January for the next three weeks.

Online Learning

All students have been provided with Microsoft 365 accounts and after using these accounts in class for the last few months they should be familiar with how to use their Outlook email and Microsoft Teams to communicate with their teacher.

If your child has any difficulty in accessing their Microsoft Account please text 0873335687 (include the students name in all texts) and we will reset their password as soon as possible.

A good starting point would be to download the Outlook app and the Microsoft Teams app on the device the student will be using for school. If you do not want to download an app then go to www.office.com on your browser and sign in from there.

If your child does not have access to a digital device please contact the school at 01 8389577, our HSCL Susan on 0876124888 or email info@cabracc.cdetb.ie and we may be in a position to lend your child a device. Priority will be given to exam year students.

Live Online classes

During this school closure students will be taught via a combination of live online classes and non live assignments which will be supported by teacher feedback and support. Live classes will take place via Microsoft Teams and students should be familiar with how to use Microsoft Teams at this stage. There are guidelines here for how students should interact with the teacher during the live online classes.

All year groups will receive a timetable of their live online classes on Monday via email. This schedule will also be texted to parents. Live online classes will begin for all year groups on Tuesday 12th January. Teachers will contact students directly regarding how to join their online classes.

Monday 11th – Book collection

All students currently have books in the school building that will be needed for online learning. We have allocated times on Monday for students to visit the school to pick up any books they require. Students must enter the school alone, wear a mask at all times, sign in with the porter and then spend no more than 10 minutes collecting their books. No mixing of students is permitted. Please ensure that students bring a bag for their books.

The allocated times are as follows:

  • 9.30am – 10.30: First Years
  • 10.30 – 11.30: Second Years
  • 11.30 – 12.30: Third Years
  • 12.30 – 1.30: Transition Years
  • 1.30 – 2.15: Fifth Year (LC and LCA)
  • 2.15 - 3.00: Sixth Years

By Monday evening all students should have:

  • Collected their books from the school at the allocated time.
  • Logged into their Microsoft account on their device.
  • Contacted the school if there is a problem with their account or they need to borrow a device
  • Responded to the message received from their class tutor on Monday via Email or Microsoft Teams.
  • Received their timetable for their live online classes and are ready to go for Tuesdays classes.

Finally, I would ask all parents to encourage your child to take part in online learning during this school closure. It is so vital that students maintain a connection with school during these challenging times and the routine of school will provide students with the structure and support needed to get through the next few weeks.

Thank you again for your ongoing support over the last few difficult months.

Stay safe.

Tips for supporting your child through online learning

Establish routines and expectations

Agree a start time, maintain breaks and know when to finish. Look at your family’s schedule and figure out the best times for learning.

Choose a good place to learn

Help your son/daughter to make space for learning - It’s important to set up a quiet, clutter-free area

Stay in touch with the school.

Stay in touch with the school. Schools and teachers are happy to advise and support your role in your child’s online learning.

Help students ‘own’ their learning

Help your child to find ways to work and learn which best suit them. Work with their strengths and celebrate achievement.

Check in regularly

Be familiar with the school’s learning plan and check in with your child each day to discuss how you can help.

Plan for balance

Plan some exercise, activities, and non-screen time. Provide healthy meals and snacks. Manage stress by encouraging them to talk.

Remove distractions

Make a list of the things that distract your child (social media, TV, pets…). Then, find ways to limit them during learning time.

Plan for shared use of devices

If you have only one device, plan for who gets priority and when. Aim to support work in bursts of 30/40 minutes

Talk to other parents

Other parents are a great support. Share ideas, tips and/or concerns.

Remember to encourage your child to stay connected with friends
